If the sides of the square increased by 7 cm. ,the area becomes 144 cm2 . Find the length of a side of the original square.

Solution :

Let x be the original length. Now the side of the square is increased by 7 cm. So, new length = (x+7) cm.

Area of the square=(x+7)(x+7) cm2.

According to the question,

(x+7)(x+7) = 144

=> (x+7)2 = 122

=> (x+7) = 12

=> x = 12 - 7 = 5

So, length of a side of the original square is 5 cm.
