The circumference of the base of a 24 m high conical tent is 62-6/7 m. Calculate the area
of the canvas used in making the tent. Also find the volume of the air contained in it.
Solution: The circumference C = 2 π r = 62-6/7 m
Therefore, r = 440/7 x 7/(2 x 22) = 10 m
The slant height = √(r2 + h2)
= √(100 + 576) = √676 = 26 m
Area of the canvas used = π r l
= 22/7 x 10 x 26 = 817.14 sq. m
The volume of the air contained in the tent is
V = 1/3 x π r2 h
= 1/3 x 22/7 x 10 x 10 x 24
2514.2 cu. m
