A person sells an apple for $ 5.25 and gains as much per cent as its cost price is in Dollars.
Find the C.P. of an apple.

Solution: Let $ x be the C.P. of an apple.

If he sells for $ 5.25, the profit = $ (5.25 - x)

Therefore, profit percentage = (5.25 – x) / x X 100 = x (as given)

Therefore, 525 – 100x = x2

i.e.x2 + 100x - 525 = 0

i.e. (x + 105) (x - 5) = 0

Therefore, x = - 105 or x = 5

Since, x cannot be negative, x = 5
